Games Im a British writer who covers current and retro gaming Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin. As my wonderful colleague Erik Kain recently highlighted, Microsoft decided to shelve its efforts to make past-generation games accessible on Xbox One; instead, its shifting focus to the exciting Project Scarlett. Luckily, everything from Microsofts BC line-up will work on Scarlett tooas will all Xbox One titles. While very impressive, its a little disappointing for fans of Microsofts debut console. Theres no doubt that Tony Hawks Pro Skater -like releases were held back by music copyright; elsewhere, companies that created greats like TimeSplitters 2 one of my own all-time favorite games are no longer with us, making IP ownership confusing at best. While the BC treatment of 360 classics such as Spec Ops: The Line, Sonic Generations and Forza Horizon has been delightfully received, I know of five more that deserved this life extension. Its quality was, in hindsight, unsurprising: its creator, Bizarre Creations, was behind Project Gotham Racing and Geometry Wars, as well as consistently brilliant one-off games like Metropolis Street Racer, The Club and Fur Fighters. Dont hold your breath for a proper sequel, either; Bizarre is no longer with us, joining Sierra, Shaba, Radical on the list of developers shuttered following purchase by Activision. Yet Beautiful Katamari was its sole, exclusive outing on the 360, as well as the only Katamari title ever released in Xbox history, making its omission from the BC list even more galling. It was up to you to recreate the wider solar system by rolling titular katamaris around the world and pushing them into space. As far as the dialogue went, it was brilliantly executed, and surprisingly risqu for a family-oriented title. The music was its greatest strength; the soundtrack enhanced a wacky game to surprisingly emotive degrees. The best of them all was Guru Guru Gravity, one of the happiest tunes in gaming history, which accompanied the Seadome (Neptune) stage. Max Payne 3 didnt need a blood-trail dream to drive a horrific story home; his older, ever-cynical character was based more around his sad but ultimately human problem with drugs and alcohol. Yet those on Xbox One couldnt even use the 360s wired peripherals, never mind play the games, before Xbox BC was closed down. ![]() No regrets. Its a case of getting licenses for every songand theres no incentive for Harmonix to go through that for another console, especially as peripherals are long out of production. It did, at least, allow DLC songs to work on Rock Band 4 but the wireless controllers, and game, werent a patch on what came before. Beatles Rock Band Rom Movie But WasThis stylish, 2D side-scrolling beat em up drew from the comics art style as opposed to the excellent movie but was all the better for it. The license presumably expired, and if you didnt get it originally, youve got no chance of grabbing it.
